Having started my musical life as a snare drummer in drum corps, I moved on to playing drums and singing in rock bands in the eighties. Through the years I’ve been in a great many bands playing rock, blues, folk, jazz and country, performing all over Maine and New Hampshire.
As a solo singer/songwriter, I started mostly in Mid Coast Maine, in such towns as Islesboro, Northport, Belfast, Camden, Lincolnville, Searsport, Stockton Springs and Rockland. During this time I had a song playing on WERU and another song “Real Men” was being covered by a Canadian singer/songwriter named Brett Service. Later an Australian musician added her accordion to Brett’s recording. Then I was surprised to hear a very unique cover of “Real Men” by a British musician.
My songs cover a huge amount of subjects, some humorous, some serious and of course love songs and songs about living on our Maine coast. I have a working song list of approx. two hundred. (new songs added all the time) I don’t write to any one genre and as a result get into folk, folk rock, blues, bluegrass, country, and even Irish music. I play acoustic six and twelve string Taylor guitars and Hohner harmonicas in my live show. In the studio I also play Slingerland drums and a mysterious Les Paul that may or may not be a true Gibson girl. My two recent albums feature Jud Caswell on bass and were recorded at his Frog Hollow Studio in Brunswick, Maine. The release date is not yet established, due to life’s complications.
I spent several years in California, where I was performing as part of an acoustic duo called Three Thousand Miles. We played strictly original music at just about every venue in the Northern Valley, as far north as Dunsmuir and Mount Shasta, as far south as Chico and Oroville. We recorded a live CD at the Stage Door in Mount Shasta and our music was being played on two public radio stations, KCHO and KFPR as well as a community station, KZFR.
Upon moving back to my beloved Maine, I returned to performing as a strictly original solo singer/songwriter, mostly in Sanford, Biddeford and Portland. At this time I released a live CD of just my music with Three Thousand Miles, recorded at Sengthong’s in Dunsmuir, Calfornia. I was occasionally joined by my wife Leslie singing and playing piano and adding her original songs. As Leslie and Charles Bernier we were featured on two television stations, ctn5 in Portland and Public Access Television in Biddeford.
I am now performing solo in Brunswick, Harpswell and Bath and I am regularly featured on Harpswell’s community television station, htv14.
“I’ve seen Charles mesmerize audiences with his insightful and thoughtful songs. If you haven’t had the pleasure of catching any of his performances, you need to and you also will want to have his CDs in your library!” Scott Woodruff – president, Maine Songwriter’s Association
The plan for the future is get my two albums released and to expand my gigs to take on more of Southern and Central Maine. (and of course beyond…………) I also have more recording projects being planned. One of which will be all music inspired by Maine.
I’m available for virtually any event or venue and house concerts.
